Porter’s 5 Forces Overview

Analysing an industry using Porter’s Five Forces model involves assessing the competitive forces at play within that industry. The model helps identify the key factors that influence an industry’s profitability and attractiveness. Here’s a summary of how to analyse an industry using the Five Forces:

  1. Understand the Five Forces: Familiarise yourself with the five forces: (1) the threat of new entrants, (2) the bargaining power of suppliers, (3) the bargaining power of buyers, (4) the threat of substitution, and (5) the intensity of rivalry among existing competitors.
  2. Identify the Industry: Clearly define the industry or market you are analysing. Porter’s Five Forces analysis is most effective when applied to a specific and well-defined industry segment.
  3. Assess the Threat of New Entrants: Evaluate the barriers that may deter new companies from entering the industry, such as capital requirements, economies of scale, brand loyalty, and regulatory barriers. A higher threat of new entrants can reduce industry profitability.
  4. Analyse Supplier Power: Understand the power suppliers have over the industry. Consider factors like supplier concentration, switching costs, product differentiation, and the importance of their inputs to your industry.
  5. Evaluate Buyer Power: Assess the power of buyers within the industry. Look at factors like buyer concentration, switching costs, product differentiation, and the significance of the purchase to the buyer’s business.
  6. Examine Threat of Substitution: Identify potential substitutes for the industry’s products or services. Consider factors such as price-performance ratio, availability, and customer willingness to switch.
  7. Analyse Rivalry Among Competitors: Evaluate the intensity of competition within the industry. Consider factors like the number of competitors, market growth rate, product differentiation, and exit barriers.
  8. Rank the Forces: Assign a level of importance and impact to each force based on your analysis. Identify the most influential forces driving industry profitability.
  9. Strategic Implications: Based on your analysis, identify the industry’s overall attractiveness and potential challenges. Understand the strategic implications and opportunities for your business within this industry.
  10. Formulate Strategy: Use the insights gained from the analysis to develop or refine your business strategy. Leverage your understanding of the five forces to create a competitive advantage and address potential threats.
  11. Monitor and re-assess: Industries are dynamic and can change rapidly. Continuously monitor the forces and industry trends to adapt your strategy accordingly.

The 5 Forces Analysis Model requires MS Excel version > 2010. All models will operate at their best whilst running on MS Excel 365.

The Model will be delivered as a ‘compiled’ self-extracting file (.exe) and after installation will be available via the Windows Start Menu. Strict version control will be implemented across the model set, with changes and updates (history) appropriately documented.

The main template file will run purpose-developed VBA / Macros – a valid digital certificate has been used to ensure authenticity and security. The compiled self-extracting file set (.exe) also has a digital certificate and is recognised as ‘safe’ by the Microsoft operating system.
